Curriculum Night … and prizes!

Parents can learn so much about life at Brookdale tonight. Amid the presentations about expectations for your children, you can discover how you can help out in their classrooms and with programs and fundraisers that add to their school experience.
As you sign up for parent-teacher conferences in the Multipurpose Room, you’ll also find PTA tables where you can sign up to help with class parties, field trips and the Art Awareness program.
You’ll also have a chance to learn more about the PTA’s first two fundraisers of the year: the spirit wear sale and the gift wrap sale. Together, the sales are expected to generate about $9,200 in net proceeds, nearly half the income for the PTA to put toward assemblies, family nights and other activities this year. Both sales begin next week and continue into September.
And while knowledge certainly is its own reward, a gift basket also makes a lovely prize.
Be sure to stop by the gift wrap table to enter a raffle for a gift basket filled with all kinds of items representing what’s available in the sale. A raffle entry is free, and winners need not be present at the drawing. Just stop by, fill out a raffle ticket and cross your fingers.
If you’re the lucky parent, all of this will be yours: a winter-design ceramic bowl, cup and platter set, candy and nuts, cheese and sausage, a nut chopper, a cookbook, a collapsible colander, measuring spoons, four silicon mini cups and four different bath spa items.
Curriculum Night runs 6 to 8:15 p.m., with PTA information available throughout the evening.

Make memories with the yearbook

Flash forward 30 years: What will your children remember about Brookdale? A few interesting class projects? The teacher who sparked an interest in a new topic? The good friends who made them laugh every day at lunch?
Maybe as they’re helping their own children get ready for the first day of school, they’ll pull out their Brookdale yearbooks. They’ll page through and see the little smiling faces, the pictures from field trips and class parties, the signatures from friends, and they’ll remember so much more. Just think of the stories they’ll have for their children.
Janet LaRocque has organized and edited the Brookdale yearbook for several years, but with her youngest child in fifth grade, she’ll be putting together her last book this year. It’s time, she says, to show the ropes to the next yearbook editor.
Creating the yearbook takes a fair amount of organization, and Janet recommends the volunteer should be comfortable working in Microsoft Word and Excel. And because so many photos are submitted digitally, she suggests a familiarity with Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) for editing photos and organizing them with tags.
A parent interested in taking over yearbook duties would spend this year working with Janet, who is willing to hand down her process and her knowledge of Photoshop. E-mail Janet at janetlarocque@yahoo.com and Vice President Judy Nagel-Conley at jln0522@aol.com to volunteer or ask questions.
Years from now, your children could thank you for helping them make memories.

Welcome aboard

Amid the summer fun, two enthusiastic parent volunteers have moved into new roles on the PTA’s Executive Board.
We welcome Judy Nagel-Conley as the new vice president and Jan Mallak as the new secretary. Both were elected in April and formally assumed their new duties following the May meeting.
Judy has three children, all of whom will attend Brookdale this year. Aidan is in fourth grade, while twins Connor and Ashley are starting kindergarten. With all three children in school, Judy looks forward to volunteering in their individual classes as well as working on school-wide projects as vice president.
“Brookdale is a fantastic school, filled with extraordinary teachers and leaders. We are very fortunate to have such an involved parent community. It is the coordination of efforts between teachers and parents that makes Brookdale such a special place for our children,” Judy said. “All of our children benefit from everything that the PTA provides, whether it's social activities, assemblies or classroom equipment.”
As a volunteer, Judy has presented Art Awareness sessions, helped classes with research, read with children through the Read Naturally program, chaperoned field trips, planned class parties and served as a classroom coordinator.
Like Judy, Jan has volunteered at class parties, served as a classroom coordinator and helped at PTA events. Her daughter Lindsay is in third grade while her daughter Abby is in second grade.
“I have had many great experiences with the teachers and staff at Brookdale for the three years my daughters have been in attendance,” Jan said. “I look forward to working more with the PTA this year as secretary to continue not only my own positive experiences, but to contribute to the positive experiences of other Brookdale families.”
Jan and Judy take over from Sheila Fleming and Melissa Winchester, whom we thank for their two years of service on the Executive Board.
“I want to thank them for the hard work they have done,” board President Barb Peterson said. “I, personally, thank them for the input, ideas, suggestions and honesty they’ve given me, this being my first year on the board.”
Melissa, who served as vice president, and Sheila, who was the secretary, plan to co-chair the classroom coordinator committee for 2010-11.
